I've narrowed it down to the following... feel free to add any more that I may have overlooked

1999 Golf GTI 1.8
1995 Toyota Celica GT 2.0
2000 Renault Clio 1.4 Sport
2000 Peugeot 206 GTI
1999 Vaux Astra SRi 2.0
MG ZR 1.8 120

Obviously I want it to be quicker than the 1.2 Sxi (shouldn't be too hard) but I also want a balance of reliablity and economy.

MG ZR 120's are 1.6 I believe.

It's 160 or nothing when it comes to them.

I'd say Golf, Astra, or ZR160. If you can find a 160 within in your budget.

Golf or Celica from the list.

Also worth considering a V6 Vectra. They're cheap, reliable, fast and practical. Produce a better sound than everything in your list too.
