Okay, recommended spec for Footy Manager 2005 is:

1.8GHz processor
256MB RAM
8x CD-ROM drive

Easy enough, give me a few mins to get some prices together...

Okay, how about this:

Asus A7N8X-X nForce2, ATX, DDDR400, 10/100 Lan, USB 2.0, 6Ch Audio, IDE = £38.65
AMD *Retail* Athlon XP 2800 + *333 FSB* Barton (2.08 GHz) with AMD Heat Sink Fan 3Yr = £64.95
512Mb PC3200 (PC400) DDR Memory (Major) Retail = £26.66
128MB Gigabyte N55128D-P-GeforceFX5500, 300/500MHz, AGPx8, 4xPipeline, DirectX9.0, TVOut, DVI = £43.48

I make that £173.74......now, you didn't mention whether or not you needed drives, so will add those on aswell:

120Gb Maxtor Plus 9 ATA-133 (7200rpm,8MB) - PATA = £46.96
NEC ND-3540A Ivory 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer DVD-Writer, OEM UK = £31.64

Grand total with drives: £252.34

I agree with near enough everything Dan said except the processor. Get an Intel instead, Athlon XP's run very hot, and to the limit of the capibility. And because you're getting an Intel, you'll need a motherboard with the correct socket.

Try www.microdirect.com for parts, as they're quite cheap.

Yes, Athlon's run hot, they're designed to......with decent cooling, the temperature isn't a problem. I've never had a problem with any Athlon running excessively hot (the XP2600+ I've currently got is running at 2.1GHz, and doesn't go above 50 degrees - 72 degrees is supposedly when warning bells go off, it's never got even remotely close to that temperature).

And the above prices are from Scan.

The reason quite a few people choose AMD rather than Intel? Here's what I'd say is a performance-comparable Intel CPU to the AMD chip I chose above:

2.8GHz Intel Pentium® 4 S478 CPU "Prescott" (800FSB) HT 1MB Cache *Retail* = £117.21

Notice the difference in price?

But the Intel has HT (Hyper Threading), and is well worth the extra money

I run a AMD 3200XP 64, just opening my mobo temp monitor software it shows that the CPU is currently sitting at a constant 44deg C and has been for a considerable time now (my PC was left on over night), the threashold at which the probe will warn me that it's getting even close to overheating is 80deg C, I run a standard AMD heatsink and cooler and have only added one additional casefan as the case is just a old cheapy, the desktop unit itself sits on the floor right next to one side of the desk (the removable side of the case that is vented so it's effectively blocked) and the back is practically against the wall behind it with only a few inches of space - so it's not exactly ideal for air circulation by any stretch of the imagination.
My PC has been like this for the past two years and I've NEVER had any problems at all with either this AMD CPU or my previous one overheating.
