Taking valves out isn't as hard as I thought it would be. Needed to modify my valve spring thingie though...
Also, anyone know of any good de-greaser, or are there people who will clean the head out for me, it's already been ported too 
Also, the hexaust valves are caked in crap, whats the best way to sort them out? 
Oh, and I need to clean my pistons too

look on topbuzz or max boost
think you stick the valves in a drill and hold fine sandpaper against the shaft.
leave the seat area well alone though
stick the head in the dishwasher.

if your putting the same valves back in its best to keep them in order mate.
also a wire brush or some fine wet and dry will clean the valves

wire attachment on drill will clean pistons and valves mate,
keep it all in order as well

Everything is arranged in little bags, all nicely labled up, apart from a few of the gearbox bolts. Oh and the head bolts which are in the bin... I was thinking about sticking the head in the dishwasher too. That guy on 'A 4x4 is born' on discovery did it. I just think mine is way too dirty for that...

I tried taking the valves out of my c20xe with a standard spring compressor but had the same problem! wasn't long enough. Can you buy ones that are? or do you have to modify them? don't spose you fancy hiring it out?!?! lol, seriously.

You can buy them with longer bits on them. I thought that one would do, but I had to get my trusty welder onto it

There will be bits left over... Only old bits like the water pump, head bolts, tappets, timing belt and pullys...

give it a once over with gunk and a hose first then.
and make sure your mums not watching when it goes in the dishwasher.

Yep, it's in there with Finish Powerball now... Gave it a soak in WD40 and a scrub with some Fairy liquid too, that stuff rocks!

I used brake and clutch cleaner fluid as you can buy it in gallon drums, and use a PLASTIC brush, it's very soft alloy and you dont' really want to scratch it any mor ethan you have to.
for the head mating surface, chamber and piston tops (although the last one is pointless) scotchbrite pads and WD40
*side note*
The head isn't ported as such, that's how cosworth finished them from factroy, there's still gains to be had from a proper gas flow job on it*
Oh and removing the valves easy I like the 17mm/19mm extended socket+extension and a malet method, about 10x faster than using a valve spring compressor.

Ed- if you need a new headgasket set I can get GM (elring ones) for £50
Oh I hope you kept the washers that go with the head bolts as you shouldn't throw them away, you don't get new ones with the head bolts and they are £10 from vx and take a few days to come in from germany.

Ah cool... I kept the washers thinking they might be useful
Only been using plastic brushes and a nylon scourer.
Will be looking for new parts in a few weeks time too so I will let you know, cheers mate
