nope XP Pro should work.
First thing would be to try and source another copy.
If it still crashes you want to look towards the hard drive and maybe even the memory. Do you have spares that you can try?

if you still get the problem after trying the above then you might want to look at memory. Try seating it in different slots on the motherboard.

I had this problem and it turned out to be the CD drive that I was installing XP from. Worked it out by logically swapping all the other components and it was the only thing that it could be. I couldnt believe it and I knew no one else would so I got a mate of mine to try it too (Houckham off here). Changed the cd drive and it worked fine

I was actually going to suggest a different CD/DVD next
For some reason my writer doesn't recognise some cd's whereas my normal cd drive does. I've even upgraded the firmware for both drives and it still doesn't have any of it.
Computers eh?

Ive tried using the DVD one, stops on the blue screen, the CDRW drive gets as far as installing most/all of it but then the machine keeps loading "Serious error" and crashed

All the LED's and jumpers far as I can tell are correct, the "Slave Master" jumpers on the hard disks and cd drives are all correct...
I will try memory in a different slot in a in tho!

how many hard disks do you have?
If it's just the one then the jumper should be set on Primary/Master.
It might be worth trying it on the Secondary chanel though. You really need to try a different hdd altogether though to isolate the problem

One other thing, do you have your sound card and other peripherals installed when installing XP?
When i installed it round a mate's house it wouldn't work when his USB devices and sound card were plugged in! We took these out and it installed fine.
Something about XP not liking the hardware... not quite sure.
Something to try though.

Nah got master on DVD and Secondard on the CDRW and IDE same!
Got one Hard disk plugged ion at the moment on Master not plugged other in at all currently
Justed moved the memory and PC bleeps dont boot up, so gotta have the memory in the 1st slot and not the other 3 ! Will now try again, but wen XP Installed "copying files from cd" on the blue screen bit, keeps saying cant locate files no matter what CD I use I press enter sometimes finds them sometime dont! DOnt seem to get very far

I would try taking the DVD or CD out and just using one for now. Infact I would use a one out of a computer that I know definately works as it sounds the same problem as I had.

oops, didnt read it properly
Most likely the copy i would say.
If you wanted to check if its Hardware trouble, you can download this Linux OS and it just runs from the CD http://www.dynebolic.org/ it doesnt touch your hard drive!
If it crashes its hardware, if not, then its the CD.
hope that helps
