Quite a few of yous off here will of been to buy a C20XE donor car at some point, and I was just wondering what sort of stuff you look for when checking it over.

The astra I have my eye on is up for £500. The engine revs up sweet, and the car itself is in very good condition for a 100k mile car. The issues I have are the transmission feels very sloppy, and the car kind of.... torque steers (<--can I call it that? ) and pulls all over the road when you floor it!!

done a search, found some usefull stuff... but just wondering if anyone can give me anything else to take a close look at before I part with my cash. Was there anything you wish you had checked before buying....?

And my other question is how did you get rid of the shell once you pulled the engine out? I hear of people making money out of the parts but who the hell wants a crusty old GTE shell??

Wont even start building it for a while yet though, wana get my power plant sorted and re-built first

u doing any of it yourself?

get a corsa, nova's make people look about 17yrs

not that a corsa is much improvement, but a bit more justifiable

But I would be building it for the grin factor, not for an image or a look!!!

The rebuild will be done by a friend of mine who is a mechanic, with the help of.... erm... . Me!

The actual conversion might have to be done by Lee M or someone, no matter at the moment cos its no where near that stage

Ive fallen in love with the Astra for the time being anyway... shes clean and stealthy.... and just wants to rev and rev !

The problem with buying an engine when its not in a car is that there could be any number of hidden problems, which wont pop up untill you go to start it!

trying to find out if I can insure it at 20 with 1years NCB.... but they all keep telling me you have to be 21 to insure an Astra GTE 16v

There are definitely some 19year olds on here with these engines in Corsas... so how did you lot get quoted??

Dont mind paying up, just want a quote

No worried boys and girls, I jus been quoted

Looks like I may have to leave the engine in the astra for the time being though....!

Unless I throw it in a kit car... which aint exactly practical

i bought a calibra 16v.
had rusty arches, but drove fine, and seemed to have a good engine.

drove it for 6months as my only car before getting the corsa that the engine was destined for.

i don't think it would have stood a chance for it's next mot, but would have happily lasted the year out if i hadn't split it early.

had slightly funny electrics making the tail lights do funny things, the rear arches were staring to go through, and it had a pretty bad leak somewhere around the shell letting in lots of rain water.

i bought it for £900, got 6months of trouble free motoring out of it, kept the engine, all ancillaries, and brakes, have sold bits of it for about £300 so far, and still have loads of bits lying about the garage/ in my room.

i'd be a little wary about buying an engine on it's own without being able to hear it running first, so was quite happy to be able to drive it for half a year to know that it wasn't a shitter.

Seems like this GTE is a bargain at £500 notes then? Will be a shame to break her though cos its really a very clean car!
