To cut a long story short, an exhaust valve spring in cylinder 4 shattered at the weekend. Dropped a valve, destroying the piston, forcing bits up into the head, and destroying that too.
The bad news is that the block is prob knackered and the head is a write off. The good news is that the 3 remaining pistons, steel rods, crank, cams etc all appear OK. So I'm now looking for a donor engine (C or X16XE) to transfer my bits into. Doesn't really matter what condition/age it is, since it will be rebored/rebuilt completely. So if anyone has a complete engine or block/head they want to get shot of, please let me know

Only 6000rpm. It's an issue related to the double spring setup. I have already worked out a way round that one for the rebuild

I would of thought a tri-turbo 12v would of been better... 1 turbo per-cylinder...

Shit man, sorry to hear the news, this is the engine i think all us 1.6 boys look upto, well i did any way, whats the problem with the valve springs, im always keen to learn more, i know when ya running wild cams which you are ya need a double spring set up and the head has to be machined to accept the larger springs, but what caused it, did the spring inside the larger one contact or summit,

What the long story why did it break and what are you doing to avoid it next time? different make?

Yes, with aggressive cams, you need double valve springs to open and close the valve rapidly. Prob is that the small spring sits inside bigger one and there's inevitable contact as they compress/expand. This adds extra stress and means that over 8000rpm, you need to check/replace springs every 10000 miles or so. SBD replace all their valve springs after 1200 miles
I was a bit unlucky here, but when I rebuild it, I don't want to have to keep stripping it down every few thousand miles - fookin expensive. However, had a very interesting chat with the guys that used to build the Vauxhall group A rally car engines this morning. There apparently is a single spring available that will do the job and give me hugely improved reliability. It will also work with a cam profile that will still give me over 215bhp at 8500rpm. I'm working on it

Keep us updated please Andy I'm putting the throttle bodies on at the moment hopeing to have it finished soon and was planning the head work and lumpy cams next year.
I never knew the springs had such a short life but I guess when they have to cope with 8,000+ revs cant be good for them
