Anyone know what to do here?? I think I might need to edit a file but I can't find it!!
Thanks.

Run Xconfigurator at the command line to config monitor setup...
Config file is stored in /etc/X11/XF86Config file. Use 'pico /etc/X11/XF86Config' or such-like to edit the 'Screen:' section and specify a resolution/refresh rate that your monitor can cope with.
The message on your screen means the refresh rate or resolution is too high for your monitor...

I know it all, I have just finished setting up a server at work with RedHat 9 on it, but there was no problems with that...
It just wont pick the settings up or my monitor... and I can't find a config file in any of the directories... it's not because I don't know what I'm doing, it's because it's crap

But RedHat installs itself, probes your hardware so you don't even have to know what it is, etc...
How can you *fail* to get a copy of RedHat working?
When you say it does this after 'boot'. Do you mean after the bios or do you mean after the linux init has completed and it's about to switch to X11 to login (if you enabled graphical login on install)?
If it's hanging just after the bios you need to take a look at your bootloader video mode line...

The Init runs OK, starts everything, All OK, but then as soon as it switches to graphical logon it flashes on for about a second and then fives me the above message bouncing around the screen...
I'm new to Linux installations.... I only set up 1 server before and there was no trouble
As for the probing... yeah it does it, it asks me to select my video card, then the monitor, then all the settings are right, but it still doesn't work, I've tried it with my CTX driver for the monitor and I've tried Generic drivers, none will work though, I've even tried it on 640x480, 1024x768, 800x600... none work

I chose my graphics card from a list when I installed it... but it didn't have GForce FX 5600 so I just left it on GForce FX.... do you think it would have been this? and should I use the generic driver??

go for mandrake mate, i found it alot better than red hat and it installed pretty easierly. Only problem i had was it didnt support raid out of the box, well not my raid chipset at the time, so i had to hunt down raid drivers and compile a kernel which took me ages, since i had never used a linux box before
Ive also tried Lindows. I know its not propper Linux (as some will say) but its the bollox and runs loads of windows software go me counter strike and everything However, lindows doesnt support raid period....so i was fooked on that, and had to install it on a standard IDE drive

ok m8 found this link for you give it a try the nv driver should work although it may not give you full accelerated 3d if you want full acceleration go to www.nvidia.com and get the latest linux driver anyway try this first and see if it works:
ttp://linux.derkeiler.com/Newsgroups/alt.os.linux.redhat/2003-09/0562.html
Hmnn looks like quite a few people have had problems with dead rat 9 and nvid 5600, do
a googly search for "nvidia 5600 redhat 9" and quite a few queries, do you have to use that particular graphics card?
(anyway I take it back it's crap nvidia drivers although not linux's fault it's nvidia's they won't release the source code to their drivers to open source peeps can't fix them)

OK I should have tried the link first doesn't seem to work so I'll cut and paste in their suggestions:
The way I worked around this was to install in text mode, then configure the
system for "text mode" boot.
The first time the system boots after the install, log in as root.
Then edit /etc/X11/XF86Config (using vi), go down to where it calls out the
driver for the video card and change it to "nv". This will load the open-source
2D driver.
After you save and close the file, type "startx". If the X server starts up
you're good to go. If you plan on playing 3D games and such you'll need to
download and install the 3D driver from Nvidia's website.
Once you have that installed and the X server is working properly you can edit
your /etc/inittab file and change the default run-level from "3" to "5" and
reboot and you'll get the graphical login.

or just try selecting "nv" driver with Xconfigurator if it allows you to specify the driver
