Looking at buying a new car, although im not in any rush so could wait if I knew something would fall into my price range within the next year.

So..... what car would you buy for under 5k? no higher insurance than grp14

Dont really fancy going down the 106GTi / VTS route although they do handle well and are quick/ish.... someone convince me

So what other fairly quick, fairly low maintenance cars are there for this sort of money.....

Was thinking along the lines of the Punto GT, Ibiza Cupra (too much ££ ), Mint Clio 16v or might just attempt the valver corsa i always wanted (insurance might be tricky).....

what would you do?

Clio Williams isnt amazingly faster than the 16v and to find one that hasnt been thrashed is difficult now.

U'd probably get a decent Festa Rs for that money but comes with baggage.

Get a Gt and put up with the handling!

now the Mk2 16v GTi is an option, solid cars too, just arent exactly head turners....... Hmmm

Punto GT is still seeming the best buy for me unless i can find a 20VT Ibiza for less than 5k.... which aint gona happen for a year or two yet

what have you got now? how old are you cos vavler insurance aint that bad.

i think u should persoanlly drive each one of these and make your own mind up...

cos everyone on here is verty opinionated...like myself who cant stand puntos's they are cheap fragile and can be high maintainence...

Will be 19 in april and i drive a ford fezzer heap o crap!

valver is out of my league i think.

GTs can be picked up for between 2-3k for a good un, and can save the rest for mods.....

for 5k you can get a lot

punto GT's are hardly head turners themselves

whereas a mk2 16v simply needs lowered and then it looks mint, and goes like stink also - and you'll have tonnes of change out of the 5k to insure it

Got any stats for a standard one Gambit?....1/4 mile etc.

Things to look out for on them?

factory 16v figures are 139bhp (124lb/f)

though late big bumper models seem to have a little bit more power as there was slight changes to the airbox setup.

0-60 is 7.9, though again this is said to be one up with 1/2 tank of fuel. some say 7.5 suppose its down to the driver

1/4 not sure, id say around mid 15's

easily modded to up the bhp, the 16v runs lean at high rpm's so adjusting the warm up regulator can see gains of upto 15bhp

you want a late 91/92 16v

they are a hoot to drive and cheap as chips to maintain

aye, and you can swap the 1.8 block for the 2.0 block from passats/corrado's or toledo's, and use the original 1.8 head & cams

straight swap just drop it in, again can push it up to around 170bhp if setup properly on a rolling road

u can pick up 2.0 blocks for £300

and the car only weighs in at 950kg
