Is the (old shape) Corsa 1.4 (possibly sporty versions only?) set up like the Tigra 1.4? They're on the same chassis / drivetrain, right? I learned to drive in one of these a few years ago, and I'm still going to councelling...

The throttle was virtually an on/off switch, the clutch was very bitey (made for slow shifts), and it had FA power (couldn't remotely hold 70mph on dual carriageway hills in 5th). It felt like they'd set it up to be "responsive", but it really hadn't worked...

I hope for your sake that:
a) Corsa's were never 'hotted up' like this, and
b) This was just a knackered example (165k might explain the lack of power).

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts, as this has always put me off recommending Corsas to friends - shame, as the the tigra (and other corsas I've been in) seem to be nice cars (for what they are) otherwise.

cheers

I learned to drive in a Tigra and found it very similar to the 1.4 Sposrt my bro has now.

Sounds like you drove a bit of a dog, the 1400's can fair shift, I had my mums old one at an indicated 120mph on the flat.

I dont know wot kind of car u were driving but the Tigra is an amazing car 2 drive. Iv had mine for a year and 6 months and iv no complaints!
Mine is the 1.4 16v and the fastest iv had it is 130mph and it still handled great at that speed and im sure it could of went faster.

And yea the engine and chassis is almost the same as the 1.4 sport.

Bearing in mind that the Tigra I drove was doing 4000rpm at 70...I'm not sure that at those gear ratios another 2000 rpm would get you to 130. Besides I'm talking about a standard car, not one that's been chipped or modded in any way.

Truth is, she wouldn't let me rev it beyond 3k, and a 16v motor with a vaguely hot cam won't be hitting the power by this point (whereas my Volvo with a 'smog' or 'economy' cam from the factory is beginning to head off the power at 3k!)

My point is this - what use it the ability to do X mph when it can't hold 70 on hills? It seemed to have bugger-all torque where you needed it. To be fair, I was learning around some big hills (anyone know Telegraph / Haldon Hill just south of Exeter, Devon?), and few 'average' cars can manage 70 there - mine only does because its tuned from the factory to give good low down power at the expense of the top-end.

JR: How heavily modded is your motor? 136 seems quite good from a 1.4

To be honest, the power wasn't my main gripe - I was far more bothered by the nasty controls. I know Vauxhalls are supposedly famous for having agressive clutches, but it was the throttle that was a total misery on the Tigra. It seemed to be giving wide open throttle after only about an inch of pedal travel - nice on the open road (if a little pointless...why not just floor the pedal?!), but a total pain when manouvering - in neutral it was like either idle or 3000rpm!

cheers
