It's due to an explosion on the sun causing electrical and atmospheric disturbances.

Damn I wish I'd seen that!
When I was a kid I used to think I sometimes saw the Northern Lights.
A yellow-orange glow flickering over the night sky...

But it's just the flares from the BP Chemical works in Grangemouth!

Aurora Borealis comannly known as the northern lights. it is caused by high speed solar winds hitting the atmosphere

Newsflash 29/10/03 200: Aurora seen from Lancaster! Around 200 this evening, aurora was sighted from Lancaster. A broad band of green aurora could be seen to the north. Activity is currently very high and it seems likely that the display will get better. Unfortunately viewing conditions are not ideal due to cloud cover, but in areas with low enough light pollution, the aurora may be visible through gaps in the cloud. Check our activity plots to see how the storm progresses. (Note: please be patient if the plots are slow to appear - our web server is very busy at present!)

Over the next couple of days, all of Scotland , northern ireland and parts of the midlands will be able to experience the Northern Lights. The largest solar flare ever recorded from the sun was abotu 2 days ago, and heading our way, we may experience crap radio/TV signals for a couple of days, but the effects when combined with the northern lights will be breathtaking. Crews on the International Space Station have taken cover apparently due to the ferocity of these Solar Flares.
