What do people use to clean and refurbish old parts, the rusted nuts and bolts etc

Where possible I want to put it back together as clean as I can, I already have a lot of parts that are irreparable so will have to replace and ideally I don't want to be sending parts away costing the earth otherwise I'd be better off buying a new one.

Or is it just not worth it for the small bits and just replace with new ?
