I'm in the same situation as you, same sort of budget and not a clue what I want!
I have been looking at getting another MK5 R32, I miss the noise of my old one, but finding a decent 55 plate to get the cheaper tax is even more difficult than when I bought my last one!
I keep looking at BMW 130i M Sports as they seem to be fairly highly regarded, can get them within that budget, but there aren't too many to choose from.

Would be a good investment tbh, if you find a decent one. Would have been best to buy one a few years back

This looks a decent M3 for your budget and a manual.

As above, you could get an early cv8 Monaro for the budget as well. Hopefully it'll appreciate in value a bit, same as the m3. Hopefully anyway because I'm hoping my vxr is going to start rising within a few years.

Edit: if it was me with £6-8k I'd be looking at a good spec Double Cab Pickup (Navara or L200)
