Just rehashed my M1330 Dell laptop from circa 2007/8 with a fresh is install and It runs like a new PC.

If I plonk an SSD in there I imagine it would be even better. New batteries are around £20 and other accessories similarly cheap.

The point of this is I need a laptop for Mrs Jambo that needs to have iTunes 50gb storage (inc photos) and be able to browse the net and last a couple of years. I don't particularly want to splash out on a new one as we are saving for a wedding and after rebooting my 5year old laptop I don't see why I can't do that to a similar one. However, buying it second hand is a worry as I might get tapped up with a keyboard full of jizz and a battery from Taiwan just waiting to self combust in the night and burn my family alive.

So question is, do people do this, can it be done cheaply and is it worth it?

A new Laptop from eBuyer with decent spec is £260.

Suggestions please

Considered a Chromebook? Not sure what it is like installing software etc but should be ok I guess?!

Alternatively, anything via Quidco so you get some cash back!

Laptops at that price range are going to be much of a muchness.

You're not going to install much considering it runs Chrome OS, eg: Google's cloud based OS, on ARM, so apps are limited. Only real option is one of the linux distro's, like Ubuntu, but i don't quite think that's what Jambo is after

Jambo - It's obviously a gamble buying second hand but if you scout eBay/Gumtree/HotUKDeals Classifieds then you can pick up some really good bargains.
Saying that, depending on your budget you might be able to pick up a new laptop especially if you use cashback/offers etc.

Edit - Refurb'd is another option; majority of the laptop manufactures have refurb/outlet sections on their sites that might be worth looking at.

I didn't realise the Chrome OS is that limited - I was considering buying one!

On first impressions this doesn't look too bad Jambo.

Just got this in an eBuyer email - looks ideal. No idea on the AMD processor tech though.
