Fair enough.

I know it's doable on Blackberry, so probably is on iPhones.

Ask Doug off here, he's your best bet of knowing, his job used to entail going into the back end of phones to download files.

Download handcent sms on the old phone. Pay for their online backup utility, back up messages from old phone to server, download on new phone.

Job done, and cheap

Thought handcent was Android only?

If you just need to backup the text's then you can try http://www.iphone-sms.com/ which allows you export iPhone texts to PDF/Excel/HTML. There's also a software version http://www.iphonesmsexport.info/download.asp.

If you want to import them into Android then have a look at https://market.android.com/details?id=org.faked.isms2droid. Bit more info about it http://faked.org/isms2droid/
