On an X16XE with powerbox, exhaust system from the manifold back (and likely to get little bits of abuse ) really needed? I always thought the bottom ends of these engines were like a chocolate kettle, so is it worth spending that extra £70 or whatever they cost?

Are you going to be upping the rev limit? If so, then definitely.

I've got them on mine. I thought I might as well upgrade them while mine was in bits as they had to be changed anyway. Not a big deal though really unless your planning what Tom said

If you're rebuilding a engine completely, fit them IMO.
Remember you need to get the caps machined.

stock balanced rods should do near 8k rpm which is pretty good tbh, but if went steel rods they tend to be for a floating piston so would need new pistons too.
