Hi, looking at a 2003 scenic 1.9dci dynamique for the new family runner. Its got 78k, fsh, belt change at 68k, but the battery went flat, when they charged it up again it says "check parking brake" but brake works as it should?

Also, the main issue, it struggles to get into 3rd gear, it doesnt crunch or make any noises & drives fine apart from that, he recons linkage, but i suspect it could be more sinister.

Just wondering if anyone knows if these are common problems, or what the likely cause might be? Anything else to look out for on these?

Cheers.

im no renault expert or know it all, but possibly the brake light issue is rear pads/shoes low? handbrake needs adjusting up (check the amount of clicks i believe anything under 10 is advised)

Think they are electronic handbrake matey? Perhaps a code reader will flash the errors off?

except for the usual card keys breaking, the microswitch on the clutch pedal, its wiring breaks, if its electric rear calipers they always seize, its possible to free them if they aint to bad but are expensive to replace, also bad for front lower arms and there a cunt to replace

Parking brake will be a fault within the electronic handbrake itself, faults varied from the lever on the dash itself to the control unit under the car, only way to tell really is to get it on 'Clip' or another diagnostic.

Majority of the time i replaced the handbrake lever on the dashboard as it would sometimes fail to engage/disengage.

3rd gear issue could be the cables themself, that run from the cabin, or a fault within the box.

If its a new box job anyone who knows what they are doing and a ramp can have it changed in 4/5 hours.

I'd personally get the fault context for it and erase the faults as they can flash up handbrake faults out the blue really, for example if the cars on a ramp and your inside driving it listening for a noise and the handbrake is on it will come up 'check handbrake' or along those lines.

Has been over a year since i worked on one so i may be a little rusty.

Re reading your post about the battery going flat its most likely theres nothing wrong with the parking brake.

Usually had to put any of the sales cars on diagnostics to clear faults if the battery went flat on the forecourt.

Box isnt hard to do if you have the facility and shouldnt skin you anymore than £150

Would be a decent purchase at £1500

Generally not bad, tie rods, track rods & balljoints are all that usually goes, belts have been done too which is a good thing.

If its got aircon which being a Dynamique it should make sure it works as well.

Ive tried to get him lower, but hes already had an offer for £1650 & rejected it, i was just worried it could have been something like needing dual mass flywheel replaced, but i dont think they have them, i mean if its an easy fix, why dont they do it & put it up for £2500ish like the rest are?

Paranoid.

Won't budge from £1700 like, tried my best!

Forgot i was on a training course over in chester tomorrow, going to swing by & have a look on the way there!

May leave a deposit & go back at the weekend if i like it.

Looking on ebay, all the boxes are going for at least £300, so deffo need to check it over.

One of these? Or an early new shape one?

Dad had one of the one above (51 plat, LW51EFM!) learnt how to drive in that car all those years ago. He said it went through gearbox bushes... the handbrake was cable though?

One of those will give you chronic back pain thought (the early one) because of how far you have to reach to touch the gearstick!

Pow, its the newer shape.
Id already arranged to view that scenic cos im in chester today, tbh it was pretty clean, the handbrake worked and i could get into 3rd gear 50% of the time. I recon it could just need oil change or linkage adjusting. But everyone has told me to stay away so i will.
