My PSU on the Thomson HD box seems to be failing - I've had so many issues with these boxes and I'm on my third after about 4 years now. It seems that you can buy the kits to modify the PSU to a higher spec than original to make it far more reliable, which I intend on doing. I've been reading on a few forums that people recommend that you replace the HDD when you replace the PSU. I don't really record that much stuff so would quite like to avoid the expense of replacing the HDD.

Does anyone on here have any experience of doing this? Could you let me know if it is essential to replace the HDD.

Why do they recommend changing the HDD?

I'm glad Iim not the only on that thinks this is odd. Then again, we are talking about forums that think that you need to spend £100 on an HDMI cable.

Quite common for the PSU's to fail on them.

When I worked at Prestige Audio, we used to use this guy and he was very good: http://www.sers.me.uk

Good luck

Sorry I guess I didn't read your post correctly, I thought you were looking for someone who did the repair.

If it helps, we never swapped out the HDD's when boxes had the PSU's replaced. Sounds like a BS & overkill combo sprinkled with a bit of hard-on and ego-boosting paste

No need to replace the hard drive - some people recommended replacing the hard drive with one which had a lower power on surge required.

The PSU upgrade is not too hard to do if you know how to solder.

Looks simple enough to do as it's only the caps that need replacing - they're easy to do

Got three capacitors in there that are obviously failed as they have popped out at the top. There could be more that have failed without any signs of destruction - hopefully the repair kit will arrive tomorrow or Monday so I can get on with mending it.

One re-built power board

A pretty quick and simple job to do, hopefully it works now!
