As has been said the ECU will knock the boost back/timing etc.  
What may have happened is he used a dawes device or bleed valve, wound in too much boost and it went bang.  
These maps are built with differences in, most of them overfuel to make it safe, so an extra 2 psi won't kill it.  
On my old cLET I used to run 30psi in 5th and 6th as I had copied chips that didn't seem to have any problem with it. They were 'EDS phase2' meant to be set at 21psi iirc. I killed K16's monthly. lol 
   
 
it was prob wound the wrong way by quite a lot,  
 
the c20let engine is totally different to tune than z20s
