Upgrade the fronts first. Doesn't matter how much bass you've got if you can't hear the vocals.

I was in that position up until a few months back - Got me Corsa C - The Factory fit system in the car was ok but needed a severe boost.
Was on a budget.
Firstly i put in a pair of Sony Xplod 6x9's. and disconnected the Factory rear speakers.
Then I took the AWFUL VDO head unit out and put in a Sony Xplod CDX-700 4x50watt Cd player -
put in a 800Watt Sony Xplod amp and ran a 12" Xplod Sub and the Sony 6x9's off the amp 3 way - 400 going to the Sub and 200 each goin to the rear 6x9's. reconnected the factory rear speakers, then used the head unit to drive the factory speaker setup in the car. I have the car factory fit speakers putting out the mid and high frequencies, so they don't distort when u turn the system up. while the rear 6x9's are running a full range and the Sub oviously doin the Bass. It's not up to the Spec that i am going to end up with, i am putting in some components when the funds are available but its a Great sound to anyone who has heard it. The setup cost about 500 quid and wired it myself.
Hope this was of some help
Ade
