Makes me laugh all this enviro-nonsense though.
They moan at the little guys for driving to work instead of using an eco-bus or a crap electric car yet will get behind something like this

Theres actually a deeper reason to do this.
MoD idea really. They want to promote engineering to future students so in the future there is a talent pool to pick from - so the MoD then have the talent to develop future technologies/resources. The aim of the project is to inspire the younger generations and develop new low carbon technologies in the process.
War situations tend to accelerate technologies (WW2). At the moment the main technology drive with the current wars is on body armour - improved manufacturing and forming of composite materials. Theres also lots of alternative IC engine development going on - Cosworth are currently involved with the US Navy developing propulsion systems for UAV's.
The Bloodhound project is just seen as another method to develop future technologies.
