My other half needs a motor for getting to photoshoots and the like. Current car is a 2000 Polo 1.4 16v and is just too small.
Requirements for the new car:
Economical(so probably diesel?)
Largeish (5dr hatch size)
Enough grunt to plod along at a ton happily on the motorways
£5-6k budget
Nothing french
sub 80,000miles
Newer than 2000
Hatchback/Estate
Initial thoughts went straight to an ex police T5 estate which can be had for sub £5k but I think running costs could be abit high as she's got a heavy right foot lmao
Then went onto golf mk4 GT TDIs, seat leon cupras etc. Interest to hear any other thoughts incase I'm missed anything. Can you get any petrols that compete on economy/reliability with the VAG diesels?
Cheers

For the Focus it'd be Mk1 facelift. So about 2002 up to about 2005.

7k is too much I'm afraid. It's only to push us on for a year until we can get a mk5/mk6 glf gt tdi.

Providing this was a genuine find i.e. not a CAT D or something, this is perfect.

Some very cheap fabias to be had looking at pistonheads. Same engine as the cupra/golfs I assume?
Contemplated a vectra but I've heard bad things about failing fuel pumps?

Fek thats damn cheap! saloon is no good, but I like your thinking.
I guess a fabia would be a more rewarding drive though?

tbh if she is doing plenty of miles and wants something bigger than a Polo, there is no point her in getting the Fabia, because it's pretty much the same class of car.
A Focus would be comfier, and should she prefer that to the sporty drive, she could get the Ghia.

We've got a white backdrop which is 3 metres long. it fits fine in my golf from the front passenger footwell with about 2-3inch to spare from the back window. In the polo it's out of the sunroof. Obviously an estate would be the most sensible option but she's not convinced, lol. So a 5dr hatch is the only way really
