Did you take a photocopy of the form you sent back?

Call them and tell them and if that doesn't work, write a letter explaining exactly what you did and when.

You'll have to write them a letter explaining the situation.
If you have photocopies of what you sent, enclose them, although it sounds like you probably haven't tbh.

I've had problems with the DVLA again lately. They really are a total shower and normally a brick wall when it comes to appeals. Although it's always worth writing especially if you are 100% in the right, as you have nothing to lose.
They fined me because my Mercedes wasn't re-SORN'd in time. I sent them a polite and eloquent letter stating my circumstances and mitigation. Several weeks later I got a letter back saying they still wanted the fine.
The best thing you can do is appeal in writing in good time and hope for the best but accept that they will inevitably uphold the fine against you.
For futute reference, don't mail the form. Take it to the post office (where they will barcode scan it), or, if you can, your nearest DVLA office and SORN the car personally and get a receipt.
Don't rely on the DVLA to remind you when it's due because they probably won't. Keep a note of the date it runs out on your callender, phone etc and get it done before it falls due.
In my experience and opinion, the whole SORN scenario was thought up by some number crunching, evil civil servant genius as a guaranteed way to make 'X' ammount of revenue each year from otherwise fruitless, unused vehicles. So it does not work in the DVLA or the government's favour to actually remind the keeper whan their SORN is due.

Or do it online

Hmmm, still potentially iffy Mister Conway. They could still deny it. A physical and official receipt from the P.O. or DVLA is irrefutable evidence.

Mine was just shy of eighty quid. I'm off work at the moment too, so REALLY lousy timing.

I'm sure when I SORNed a motorbike a couple of years ago I got an email to confirm it

As long as it works. I just don't like taking any chances any more. Had my fingers burned too many times.
