Hi.

I have a LCR, 62K miles just covered.

About 2 hours ago it started to miss fire, and got worse. Now when i put my foot down slightly the engine management light comes on, and the car judders like a bitch!! The turbo spins, stops, and repeats very fast, so it sounds as if its ticking at speed! It doesn't go above 10MPG in any gear, and sort of sounds like a tractor.

Now, it seems to be coming from the bottom of the manifold, or the bottom end! I cant see much because its dark, but it doesn't sound good.

Any ideas?

fucked coil pack, unplug one by one, if revs dip when you unplug, that one is fine, if when you unplug one there is no change to the revs/sound that ones fucked.

Air flow meter? (if they have one)
Cracked turbo housing/manifold

if its showing 10mpg, it is coilpack. you have excess fuel that isnt being burnt going through the system. hence the shit mpg. dont drive it as will fuck the cat up.

but would it cause engine managment light to come on? Suppose it would... also, why would it make the turbo sound like its spinning up then stopping then spinning up really fast...

cause the turbo is trying to force through more air at a guess. Dunno, deffo sounds like a coilpack. When ours went, it sounded more like a subaru but its a 5 min job max to test the coilpacks. Failing that, you got the VAGCOM data lead and software?

haven't got the data thing no mate. . . But had a guy come out, and he plugged one in and it said multiple miss fire on cylinder one or something.. Switched it off, tried again and it had no error reports! Its pissed me off big time, but it sounds like its coming from near the manifold and exhast when i rev too, is this because its not running on all cylinders?

Worked for Audi and VW mate it's going to be a coil pack very common on the 1.8 turbos.

very possible. It can be an intermittant fault too, take the engine cover off and there is a plug that goes to the coilpack. The wires on the plugs can give loose connections, the plugs are a very very common fault too. Start car up, if it is still sounding rough, unplug cylinder 1 coilpack plug, if there is not a change to the engine note or revs, then either the plug or the coilpack is screwed. It really is so simple to check you could even do it in the dark.
