anythings easy if you know how. If you dont have much mechanical experience then yes its pretty damn difficult!

people have sed it is alot easyier if you drop the engine out, specially to put the head back on!!

Surely not just to take the head off? Much more hassle than it's worth if you're doing it somewhere without ramps or something.

You can do it in situ, although it probably would be easier to drop the engine out as the inlet manifold is a complete arse to put back on. The bottom pulley for the cambelt often needs a windy gun to get it off too.
Autodata lists it as a 10 hr job to replace the headgasket on one iirc, so id give yourself a whole weekend to do it in if its your first time and you are limited in your range of tools.

I managed to get the head of an XE in situ, that's daft if the 1400 needs to be dropped.

i reckon you'd be easyer if you put a trolly jack and a block of wood under the engine so you can drop the engine down to make some bolts a bit mroe accesable.
shouldn't take to long to do tbh..
