PD injectors are different to normal common rail injectors because they have a cam acting on the injectors to pressurise the fuel inside them. Means the fuel is injected in at a much much higher pressure than normal - meaning better atomisation and better efficiency.
However VAG have now dropped the PD engines and gone to common rail - something to do with emmisions laws

Seperate solenoid operated pump injector per cylinder.
Atomises fuel at a pressure of one thousand and fifty bar.
Hence more efficiency and power.
More bang for one's buck so to speak Matt.

I found it hard to believe that the injectors on an engine could run 1050bar without making the world implode. Thought you might have meant 1050psi but I asked the dad (ex mechanic) and he confirmed it, that's fucking crazy pressures. Sorry for doubting you, just seemed ridiculous to me.

vauxhall common rail can hold pressure at 1250 bar.

A ha, right It does seem ludicrous doesn't it. I can understand anyone doubting it to be fact as it is just a silly ammount of pressure.
I worked at volkswagen as a tech for two years and that's one of the few pieces of technical data i've remembered. I think it stuck because A) it's a bloody silly figure and B) I actually questioned the lecturer on the training course when he was giving out the figures because I thought it had to be a typo
