What do you want from it? What engine size? What style, ie sports, touring, cruiser?
Good first bikes are the jap 600's, so honda CBR600RR, Kawasaki ZX636, Suzuki GSX-R600, Yamaha R6.
Whats your budget?

First thing I'd look to do is to find a local centre to do your CBT - using their bikes will give you a sense of if you'll even enjoy it. Then look to get a 125 on L plates for a little while before taking your test - by that point you'll be 21 so will have more choices about the actual test. You could do standard 125 which will limit you to 33hp for 2 years or DAS which will allow you any bike of any size
The fact you have no previous knowledge of bikes may mean that you simply won't enjoy it when you try it - in which case here is no point buying a bike

You are in the same position I was in 6 months ago, but I am 21 so have more options. I did my CBT and bought an RS125, rode around on that for a few months, and then used it to do the restricted test (see LiVe LeE's post, its the 33bhp bit) and am now on my ZXR400 (as you can guess by the name its a 400cc). You have to be 21 though to go above 125cc, on a full licence or not, but if you get a suitably powerful 125 you can use it for a little while and then take your test on it if you wish.
DAS courses cost anywhere from £600 + theory test + retakes on mod 1/2 + extra lessons at £25?? an hour
Doing it yourself (restricted/A2 test) buy a bike, insure it, ride it, have fun, pay for theory (£40), mod 1 (£10 x however many times it takes to pass) mod 2 (£70 x however many times it takes to pass).

for 1-2k id be looking at SRAD or early k1/2 600cc gsxr's and J1/2 Kawa's, both are good enough 1st bikes and both are failry quick. Of the two options though and having owned both I'd go for a GSXR. more comfy, better build. Just take it easy eh? Its harder to ride fast than it is to drive fast and I dont want another 'police safety' crackdown 'cos you got flattened.

you dont have to be over 21 to have more than a 125cc, i had a restricted cbr400 at 17 and then a bandit 600 when i was 18, again restricted to 33bhp,

The test has changed since I did it in January.
Just waiting for the call so i can pick my bike up. I got a Kawasaki ZX-6R for around your budget. A few people i know have said that they are ideal for starting out on.
