Hi all
My fans have become a little over-active just lately and sometimes will run on after turning the engine off for 30 seconds or so.
- Water temp never moves from the centre 90 degrees
- Oil temp sits around the 90 degree mark
- I have plenty of water in the car
- I have made sure the aircon has not been on
- The fans will sometimes run on even after short journeys
- No faults found on VAGCOM
- No faults or warnings on the dash
- The cam belt was changed about 10k ago but Im not sure if the waterpump/thermostat were replaced like they should have been!
So I thought Id try VAGCOM again and again no faults were found BUT when I left the car running, with the bonnet up and both fans flat out I checked the temp on the VAGCOM. It started at just over 100 degrees and rose steadily up to 106 degrees before I turned it off, all this time the dash display didnt budge from 90 degrees!!!!!
Now this would suggest to me thermostat as VAGCOM wouldn't pick up a mechanical failure of this and as I didnt let the car overheat the water temps have never been high enough to trigger a fault.
So, what do you guys think? Am I right with thermostat?
Just need a bit of reassurance before I strip the car down

The water temp gauge is set to always sit at exactly 90 unless the temperature is well outside of normal.

Bit crap that innit really? I know my old P1 was the same!
As for parts, I know the stat itself is about £20 but Audi want 8 hours labour to fit it!!! Ill do the belt, waterpump and tensioners while its in bits and all off!!!
Cheers guys

The fans themselves are prone to playing up, requiring a new set of fans. Or maybe the temperature sender sensor is faulty?

Its either coolant temp sender roughly £6 for new one as these alwyas go but dont leave faults or waterpump has failed best way check this is to get hold of vag pressure test pump it up to 2bar and check for leaks hope that helps bud also seen the smaller of the 2fans fail this also does not always leave a fault test voltage at fan plug only a 3pin plug on left hand side can reach this with undertray removed
