Some of the 1.4 and 1.6 Golfs have the same gearbox/same problems with the gear box

Thats me, its a great car but like people say, they rattle and make odd noises. Since we have a dedicated track car now I see no point in keeping the clio, its going to cost me too much to keep as a student as well.

Very nice cars, 0-60 in 8.4 seconds and 127mph, Xenon headlights, ours has climate control and and a lovely sprinkling of blue dials.

I think if you put it on a diet as well you could nudge that 0-60 under 8 seconds as well as typical VW everything inside is quite heavy.

Engine responds well to simple mods as well, BMC air filter, Raceland Manifold and Awesome GTi remap are good for 140bhp.

Like you have mentioned, gearbox. Well everyone says they are bad, but I wonder if a lot of it is down to people driving like divs, there is a thread on ClubPolo about who is still on their standard gearbox and there are a lot of people who haven't had to replace their gearboxes.

Change the gearbox oil for decent oil, smooth gear changes and they are no worse than say a 106 GTi box or VTR/VTS.

Order AP coilovers for ours a couple weeks back just waiting for them, can't wait

If one does go, looking at cheapest being about 200quid, can be 400 if it takes the main gear out, if your really unlucky though and the case breaks looking over 1000 i believe. (those prices are with gearbox out the car too)

..oh and a recon box on ebay with the crappy rivets replace for a nut and bolt combo cost £400 quid, so not that bad.

GSF sell the Sach clutch kit with release bearing for £100 so it's not that bad if you do have an issue.

Cheers for that Ollie is it? (ojc), yep i thinking it might just be hype in the same way that corsa's are known for stub axle's snapping , and so on, But i suppose it's a risk like with any car, i don't drive fast anyway really, and only do a few miles a week, as my boss picks me up from work every day, but the styling of them is out weighing the gear box issues atm.

I work for VW and these cars are really good.Granted as said already they wont blow you away for their performance (Standard) but are certainly not the slowest 1.6's around.
There really great fun and TBF great cars.Obviously with it being VW there pretty reliable and built well Etc.

We've never had any in at work for any real major issue's.The G/Box's arent a issue on these it's the gear selector it's self as it always leaks and sometimes seize's up Etc.

For what they are though they are well kitted out and certainly worth the money.I would have 1 myself and recommend one to anyone after this sort of car
