The key is if I can find a cheap enough Civic with low miles I would go for one..the problem is finding one. Most go for 8.5+ with lower miles on which starts getting into the VXR territory...
The plan is for cheap motoring with the Civic for a year and a half to enable me to save up a deposit on a house and a down payment on something 3 years old by Audi with an R and an 8 in its name.
God bless yearly bonuses.

Yeah 50k I reckon as they go for 65ish now with 5,000 miles on them. I say a year and a half but it will be probably 2 years.

That is quite clearly, looking at those linked in this thread, over the odds.

I have just seen a Milano (?) red one parked in the road behind my work.
I think I want one.
Going for the Type R will mean I can bank hear on 10k to go towards a deposit for a house in a couple of years.
M3 time = 0 deposit and starting my saving from scratch.

Why do people pay so much for a 5 year old civic, and even worse, think they have got a good deal

Yes. 7.5k for an 04 low miler is what I would pay max.

Towards a deposit...as John said. Ideally for the type of property I would like I need a 25k plus deposit.
10k would be a good start and mean I dont have to save for as long.
Although you can get a decent 3 bedroom terrace in a decent area in Liverpool for £120k
