Was at Formula Student at the weekend with the two teams from Uni. Had never been before and didn't really know what to expect...got a big shock anyway.

Had only seen our past and present cars, but compared to the European entries the UK entries are miles behind...and the UK is meant to be famous for motorsport!

Our Class 1 car (Black and Orange) sheared a stub shaft on Saturday during the brake test. Missed the Acceleration and Skidpan events in the morning but we pinned it and welded it back on and completed the sprint in the afternoon. The weld then failed during the Endurance event so that was the end of that. Need to check what material the stub shafts are as they should have been EN24T and it machined too easily for that. Overall the car was pretty poor though, very little design had gone into it, it was just kinda bolted together. It was the most successful car so far though as it had done around 200laps during testing. The total cost of the car was around £7000 so it was pretty good considering. Think the flatshift gearchange was the stub shaft failure.

The Class 1 (200) car (Ugly One) did pretty well. It had a weaker team working on it but they put in a lot of effort. Completed the Acceleration, Skidpad and Sprint events but the rear hub failed on the last lap of the Endurance. Gutted.

A lot of lessons learned anyway. Think I'm going to take a more active role in it next year, so hopefully mistakes wont be repeated.

I had a nosey round your car at one point. I was thinking of going down the CVT route but it looks too heavy.

Our car weighs 22.5kg But to get it to that stage there has been a lot of development so I can see where you're coming from. They want to lighten the reduction box and use a lightweight diff and gears in the reduction box to get it lighter still!
