n00b question but what does this mean? when someone says their car sounds good on overrun. is this when you let off the accelerator on high RPM?

When you back off the accelertor at high RPM at high road speed, so the engine is literally 'free-wheeling', this is when you tend to get lots of back firing.

Nope, a guy with a cheap exhasut on his 172 proves this theory wrong every morning at work 
Flames or popping/banging is basically just unburnt fuel reaching the exhaust and burning in it as far as I know. You could make a 1.2 clio pop and bang its little french tits off as long as you're overfuelling it enough.
