After my recent VXR trackday, I'm really, really tempted to get shot of my current Golf TDI and go for something much quicker and more fun. In an ideal world I would fork out for a 2/3 year old Corsa or Astra VXR, but they're still pushing 10k which is a bit too much really.

I love the Golf, but its a bit slow and a bit of a boat - the economy and cruising ability makes up for it most of the time

Anything new would need to be:
1. turbo - anything without torque would feel naff after the TDI to be honest
2. Around the £7 - 8k mark
3. Decent handling and about as quick as a Corsa/Astra VXR - 6/7ish seconds to 60
4. Not too old - 5 years max with average mileage
5. Something I can comfortably use everyday and then hoon round a track at weekends

What would you be looking at?
Or should I wait for VXR prices to drop?

The thing I loved about the VXR(s) were that they were brilliantly comfortable as you cruised along, but give it a thrashing and it was still brilliant.

Having had such a good day in them I'm probably ignoring any problems they might have

Cupra R is a good call - also a Cooper S (or Works!) but they seem so expensive even at over 5/6 years old.....

You will get a decent LCR for 8k. You wont get a decent works Mini or Astra VXR for that money.

My Golf is a Mk5 so going back to a Mk4 would be a bit crappy tbh.

How well are Minis recieved on here?

What about this for example? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1079319.htm

Maybe

Cupra R looks nice, though again its basically just a Mk4 Golf inside. I don't think I could live with a Clio. For my usual driving the diesel is perfect so no turbo (and no torque) would be difficult for me to live me I think.

Tempted to go for a drive in a Mini though. VXR still my favourite though if it wasn't for the cash
