had a cupra r for about a year, got it upto 270bhp and it was a good car although they dont handle too well

Which engine/model you looking at?
Ive got a Mk3 1.6 Sport and I personally love it.
They are generally good cars, have the usual VAG niggles of that era though (window regulators, few other electrical bits, etc)
