This may bore some people, but may intrigue others....

The data below shows how different colours perform at auction against 'book' (Book = 100%).
This is very high level and devil is really in the detail under the skin, but this proves that the colour of the car is very sensitive and silver isnt always a safe bet

Summary by Vehicle Colour (based on 3,938 of the 11,801 sales)

Colour 2005 05 2006 06 2007 07 2008 08 Grand Total
Orange 103.5% 108.4% 104.7%
Purple 102.1%
Tan 109.4% 101.4% 104.0% 100.7%
Grey 99.3% 99.4% 100.5% 101.3% 99.7%
Black 97.2% 99.4% 99.4% 99.2% 98.9%
Beige 98.1% 96.5% 98.9% 98.0%
Silver 95.5% 98.9% 99.0% 98.8% 97.8%
Red 96.1% 98.8% 96.3% 99.8% 97.7%
Yellow 103.2% 96.9% 105.1% 101.4% 97.5%
Blue 95.3% 97.5% 99.7% 99.6% 97.2%
Turquoise 92.7% 91.4% 96.3%
Green 94.0% 98.4% 92.5% 103.6% 94.7%
Brown 94.3% 94.3%
Gold 102.1% 99.9% 83.0% 95.9% 93.5%
Maroon 86.3% 93.3% 92.4%
White 91.8% 91.4% 101.9% 107.6% 91.6%
Grand Total 96.5% 98.7% 99.1% 99.4% 98.1%

A bigger sample would be a better representation, but my next car wont be gold, which strangely appears to be the launch colour of choice for many manufacturers on new products.

You cant go wrong with Black really.

Suprised about the Orange but then again its probably the sort of colour people are specifically looking for and maybe pay over the odds to get it?

Even more so on the late plate stuff. Off the top of my head, it was only the Focus ST and Grande punto that I recall orange being available in mass.

It has to be the Jag S & X type, maybe a previous generation Mondeo or Avensis too. Its certainly an odd one imo

WTF - tan?!

Ive never eveen seen a tan coloured car. Is that based on a smaple of one tan coloured car ever sold at auction and it just happened to sell over book price?

Tan for the older people with "healthy skin" Orange for the younger people with too much "fake tan"?!

Interesting that such a lary colour is that popular though!

Silver still looks good on certain cars, but the garage I work at weekly - jesus - pretty much the only 2 colours available are black or silver

Not as bad as white for 05 & 06 registered cars. I suspect that there were high volumes of white astra estate and focus disposed of at a guess
