I know ive already posted these in GC but wanted your opinions specifically on my photographs here, id also thought id share my first shots using the 500D. None of the pictures have been cropped.

The thing that impresses me the most is that you haven't cropped them!
But the image quality does look very good. What lens did you use?
What did you use before the 500D? Have you got anything to compare it to?

Just my old Tamron 70-300. I was using a 400D before, one thing ive found on the 500 is that the colours appear to be alot sharper and more contrasting straight off the camera. Obviously they are scaled down but ive still got all those images at 15mp.

Is the 500 the upgrade to the 400 then? I always thought the lower the numbers were the better it was in Canons?
Anyway shots look nice mate, you've framed them really well

Never seen the idea with having video on an SLR, bit gimmicky isnt it? Its like Live view, i haven't used it once yet on my D300

I don't get it either, seen a few clips recorded off the new Canon DSLRs and the video doesn't exactly look that great. Would rather a camera to purely take photos and a camcorder to purely take video.

Same here, but there's a market for it I guess. Tons of people cream over the 5D II for the HD video and the 500D is selling big time too.
Live View is useful. I used it a lot today. It's good when you're trying to expose a long shutter speed scene as it predicts how light it'll be. You can turn the dial up to 30" and the screen gets brighter and brighter so you can avoid taking several test shots as such.
It's also good for accurate focusing and macro photography. I have a shoot next week with some florist and I'm gunna use it a lot to get a pin sharp focus on a selective flower at f/1.2.

The video is a bit gimmicky, its brilliant quality, but unless the camera is on a tripod it shakes like hell.

According to Canon the 500D is moving away from Entry level and being undertaken by the 1000D. It shares the same processor as the 50, for motorsport photography for which I mainly do or at least try!... Ive never found the need for more than on focus point as im always using one shot before switching to manual focus. It also has the large resolution of the 50D which I like as I often blow my pictures up at work. Only real downside for me is the lack of speed.

colours look great, when I take images off my 40D I find he colours seem to lose their edge a bit but in your images they look very strong still

Focusing and FPS was the big thing for me. The 450D pissed me off. Also, the weight and size is a lot nicer to hold when you've got a heavy lens attached. It's also better designed with a top LCD and the two scroll wheels to adjust aperture and the shutter speed separately.
Has the 500D got HDMI-out?

He said they haven't been cropped, but what about edited? The colours do look good but he could be shooting JPEG and bumped the colours up in the settings?

They have been edited. As said though the colours were still pretty rich off the camera, il get an original up in a bit.

Did you change any settings in the camera at all? What mode did you shoot that in and what picture style?
