my previous ones are in my garage, including a turbo'd mk4 escort bonus...

but there not very reliable same with most old fords..

know alot of people whos got them and most the time there off the road for the wrong reasons..

Classics, very cool cars and something you would buy to keep forever as prices are only going to rise now.

Only problem is unless you have bought an absolutely mint one thats just been restored or is low mileage and was dry stored from the factory it WILL have rot on it, it will need a full restoration on the body and the engine & ancillaries will need a full overhaul and rebuild.

Not a cheap car to buy and maintain anymore, and not something you should buy expecting a good one for £1500. in reality it will be a rotten bag with a tied engine that drinks oil and will struggle to pass another mot.

You really need to take an expert with you when going to buy one, every one i went to look at when i wanted one was advertised as 'mint, much loved classic, genuine low mileage etc' was a rusty nail when inspected in depth so be warned.

One worth buying will cost you 3500-4000 and even then it more than likely will still want rust sorting somewhere.

A mate of mine paid 4800 for a nice grey one with a zvh in and even that is bubbling now!

Seriously dont bother for that price, keep saving...

it will be more then bits and bobs mate, rs turbos is a hot hatch, so would have had loads of owners for that kind of money and been ragged around by the many owners its had..

so an engine rebuilt will need to be done if it hasnt already..

and the arches etc hide alot of rust, i know many people that have had a nice rs turbo untill the kit was removed and it was rotten as a pear..

if you wanted one as a project on the side then fair enough buy one for around 1.8k, but i wouldnt like one for an everyday car as it will 9/10 have problems running etc..

An RS turbo is not the car for you then. If your not prepared to spend a lot of money restoring it then your just going to drive a nail. Ok so your a mechanic so rebuilding the engine with new shells, pistons and lifters etc wont be difficult for you but a CVH is hardly a complex motor, but your not a bodywork technician and an rs turbo is going to need bodywork. They rust on the sunroof, window surrounds, inner wings, strut tops, battery tray, boot floor, footwells and seatbelt points, sills and arches. So its a safe bet one you buy will need a bare shell restoration to stop it rotting away infront of your eyes.

If you want an 80s turbo, just buy an R5 turbo as they dont really rust that much and being a mechanic an engine rebuild on one will be naf all to you!

my old xr2i looked mint from the outside, no rust on petrol cap or anywhere.
I was driving it and caught the skirt on small pole sticking out of the floor, the skirt and most of the sill literally fell to the floor

i then removed the rest and was proper rotten underneath, the kits hide alot mate!!

as said dont get one unless you have atleast 3k

my cousin has had 3 (an s1 and 2 s2) and they are good fun to drive if you like old school power delivary. (nothing, nothing, bang!) they handle well with some decent tyres and suspension to
