i have a mate who likes to make up things then belives his thoery is right. at the min he's came up with the thoery that if your sitting in rear facing seats during a crash your gona be better off than people in forward facing seats. every one we have told this to says he's talking shit but he wont get it in to his head and car'nt find anything on google. whats your veiws on this then maybe i can put this to rest.

Id say if the rear facing seats have good proper headrests then yes. Otherwise, youl snap your neck.

Tell him to stand still while you jolt his head back to test his theory. See how far his head goes back before removing from his spine compared to the other way, ie front facing.

Ask him why the manufacturers who spend millions on safety and would jump at the chance of such an innovation haven't done it.

So competition is so fierce that they spend millions advertising but they just haven't tried something which will improve safety in their vehicles? Likely

All military troop carrier aircraft have rear facing seats. It has been proven that in a crash, you are more likely to survive due to the forces being spread over a larger area.
I have travelled on VC10 aircraft and Tristar in both PAX and in-flight refuel configurations. Each time the seats were rear facing.
Rear facing seats do provide more support in high G decelerations, but theres a damn good reason why they arent used in normal civilian operations - cabin debris.
Those wine bottles you get, the magazines you read, CD players, laptops. The babies being carried in laps. They all become high speed missiles in the event of a sudden deceleration.

Added to what Ste said... the feeling of travelling backwards is too strange and uncomfortable to most people.
Personally I prefer it, and always choose the crap seats when in a black cab

Interesting that Ste. On the same lines what always makes me laugh is that lap belts are banned/not used in cars for the middle seats, yet you get on a 500mph plane (or whatever they travel at) and they are suddenly adequate.
