What are the penalties if...

You and two of your friends take your car to the other side of the country *about 250 miles* and you take it in turns to get there. Obviously i will have insurance but my two friends (who have insurance of there own and have been driving 3+ years) will not have insurance on my car.

Im just weighing the risks and getting some opinions as im sure after a long drive (we are coming back same day) we would get extremely tired and it would be *safer* to it in turns.

Oh and people... its just a question.

You'd be done for letting them drive with no insurnce, you would get points and they would aswell. Aswell as fines, maybe disqualification if something bad happened.

Illegal if they don't have the benfit of DOC (Driving Other Cars Third Party) on their OWN policies.

Alternativley get them added to your policy as named drivers.

I can't remember if it's 6 or 8 points for the driver, and you'll get buggered too for letting them drive your car without insurance. In essence, it really isn't worth it. If need be split a room at a travel inn.

do their policies not cover driving other vehicles?

if it aint insured, its not insured. you and the person driving will get points, i think you letting them drive means you get a larger fine.

if you crash while not insured on the vehicle its a big fine etc.

if you get pulled and they dont have insurance its 6 points+ fine. and youll be in trouble for knowingly letting someone use your car uninsured

3 points and a fine for no insurance isn't it?

as an alternative, how old are you and your mates? is it worth getting them on day insurance or something?

also, on a side note, is it 250 miles each way or in total?

I'm not sure what the police would convict you of (code conviction wise) but they will both recieve IN10's (driving uninsured if they do not have DOC on their polciy) and depending what you'll get on your license it would prob me a minium of 4 pts and up to them (police) on fine.

to answer the questions :

we will all be 21..

fuck getting them insured for a day i dont think it will be worth it - ill drive and save us all £50+ quid (or whatever) could spend that on fuel ffs! lol

looks like its not worth risking it

it would be 250 there and 250 back so about 500.

fair enough lads cheers for the info

I would get a price for adding them before ruling it out.

As you quite correctly say, it'll be safer with more drivers.

The offence code for allowing someone to drive if you know they are not insured is IN24. Carries the same penalties.

Wise words! You can get done for using, causing or permitting driving with no insurance.

So they'd get done and so would you if there's no insurance.

It's one of those finite offences. You either have insurance or you don't. Doesn't matter why, and doesn't matter if you didn't know.

So either drive it yourself, taking regular brakes/red bull. Or get them insured either via their own insurance or as a day on yours.

I got insured on my girlfriend's mum's car for a day. Was only a tenner.

My bro got me added to his policy for 3 weeks while i looked after his home.

I was 20 at the time and it only cost £30.

Day insurance or add a mate to your policy, otherwise it's not worth the risk.
