Bought astra estate mk3 1998 with only one key.
I have the key number but not the immobiliser code so I need to send off for it through vauxhall £30 just to get the code plus £30 labour to code in and £30 for the key so basically £90 for a key,im thinking of either
A. Risk it and have 1 key
B. take out the chip and put it somewhere near the ignition barrel so will start with a key with no chip in say i get one cut cheaply
C. stumping the full amount
Only paid £450 for the car so seems hard to justify paying that much out for a key!!

mate take it to somewhere like timpsons and they will check if they can copy it theirs 2 types.
type one is a fixed code so you can copy it and get spares for cheap
type two is a rolling code which newer cars have which you can't copy for obvious reasons

new ecu etc.. new keys n locks chances are someone else has the other one !!

hey i can see wat u tryin to say. just do wat i did if u take the chip out of the black plastic part of the key. and take the plastic off round your steering collum ul see the full ignition barrel it should have a black box round the barrel where the key would go. use some electrical tape to tape the chip to that black box and itl start n u wont have to worry bout the chip again. then u cn get a normal key cut n itl still start. but if u dnt put chip back it wont start. ul just have th engine management light flashing at you.

Sod taking the chip out of the key and taping it to the reader, it makes the car far to easy to steal..
You are right on the change over between the different chip types.. The earlier ones could be copied (takes 2 seconds) and the later ones cant.

any good lock shop would have a coding machine where they program a blank with your code from the original key then cut it to suit. Costs £30 where i live and ive had 2 corsas, an astra and a tigra done by them.

Doesnt work on the new vauxhall keys.. Its a bastid.
