does it make a difference to you if you were buying a car whether it has full dealer history or full history but with some stamps from local garages?
ie nationwide auto centres

Wouldn't bother me, main dealers don't mean any better work IMO

Even if your car doesn't have any service history you can still find get an idea of what's been done to it etc. from old MOTs - if you have the V5 or an MOT you just go to http://www.motinfo.gov.uk and type in the reference number from either document along with your reg. plate number, and you can view and print off all MOT information since the computerization of MOTs.

If there were 2 identical cars apart from one had full dealer service history and one had full service history but with an independent garage chances are I'd go for the one with the dealer service history

I'd get the dealer to service it if it's the Trophy.

I would prefer work done at a specialist/local garage, over dealers/national garages.

Majority of people prefer full dealer whether they are better or not.

Personally, no. Although no garage is perfect.
Dad took his car to a back street garage which is pretty decent and has a good reputation. Had a service and MOT done but come out with no brake light bulb in the socket.
Mum took hers in for a service at Pug which came out with a dashboard with more lights flashing than an xmas tree.
I like to see a car with full service history with all bills and MOT certs. Also like to see the car used the same garage thoughout its previous owners life.
Athough, if you had a 40k car then i'd expect dealer service history on that.
