Great handling cars in the dry and more so in the wet with the right tyres. Quite nippy, its a rover at the end of the day though. Head gaskets about there main downfall

headgaskets go as said, and if there on solid discs the brakes are shockingly bad.

i had a ZR 160
after losing it in the ice we had in Jan i've stripped it so if you need parts let me know!
to answer your q
Headgasket failure! from 12k miles to 50k i have read! seems unpredictable just keep and eye on oil and water levels.
great handling cars and grip very well. mined loved to rev but being a VVC engine it would!
the gearbox is reported to be better in the 25s but i didnt feel the ratios were an issue in the ZR.
hard to find a decent one that isnt a high miler. all depends on your budget and expectations on a car.
as a perfectionist i struggled to find anything in the £3-4k bracket, took me two months on both occations (first was rear end shunted) to find something i was happy with!

A fort would crush a corsa mate.

I had a 110bhp turbo diesel ZR. I paid £11K for it back in 2000. I kept it for 1 year and it went back in for warranty work 13 times. I had the exhaust fall off twice, the first was driving it home from the dealers with 2 miles on the clock, the sideskirts peeled off. the badges peeled off, the spoiler come away from the boot, the plastic holding the seat leather snapped and the covers come away from the seats. The turbo went, the turbo hoses went. And some other things i can't recall.
But, it was a nice car, handled great, plenty of pull from the derv engine, used to tow the 205 rally car all over the country behind it.
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

my mate just got the 2.0 tdi zr, fairly nippy, and the handling is really good, was surprised for a standard car. my other mate also has the same car your looking at, and he could pretty much keep up with my corsa which wasnt quite running 100% so yea, not a bad car
