Considering upgrading my engine as mine is just utter tripe. So how much of a job is it
And I know I should go for a X16XE but Insurance costs just too much whereas a 1.4 isnt too bad

As easy as any, but there is an issue with the ECU as in the X10XE it's in the engine bay, not the kick panel in the drivers foot well

The way I did it was a pain in the hoop, perhaps there are other ways to do it so I'll wait for other replies before I rabbit on...

Phil's done it but with a 1.6 (pip308)
Tbh you'll probably be better off buying a new car, because my guess is insurance would be more on a transplanted engined car than an as-Vaux-intended 1.4 Sport.

i'd say look for a clean 1.4/1.6 in the same colour as yours and swap the bits over

Cheaper to sell the car and buy a 1.4.. The loom and ECU on the 1.0 12v and 1.2 16v are very different to the 1.4/1.6 16v's.
Insurance companies will rape you too when you tell them you have done an engine conversion.

I'm not debating that and that isn't in question.
What I'm saying is that he can't afford to sell his car and buy a 1.4 Sport. The engine conversion will be just as pricey, and will see higher insurance most probably than a normal 1.4 Sport.
Therefore if you can't afford it, you don't. I can't afford another car, hence why I'm sticking with the 12v.

does it have to be a sport though? i bet the insurance on a 1.4 16v CDX for example is alot less than on a sport, and prolly cheaper to buy....and how different is the spec? Just an option

Why is that though, I can put a 1.6 engine in my car for under £200 but I cant buy a clean sport and sell my car for that.
Plus the amount of work swapping all parts over etc,
No offense but he asked about putting a 1.4 in his car not the best route.

And people have said from experience that there isn't much point, because the X10XE's and X12XE's work differently to the X14/16XE's, therefore you're better of just buying new. Plus insurance will be an issue on a converted car, considering it's an issue on a 1.6 Sport for him.

A guy who lives over the road from my mate once had a 1.3 Fiesta. The engine broke so he put a 1.1 in it, and the insurance bent him over and didn't use lube.
He wasn't young either, I think he was in his 30's at the time, at the very least.

Higher spec but not 'sporty'. It's like comparing a Ghia Fiesta against a Zetec S Fiesta
