Need to have passed before 2001 or do a extra test!

Car and trailer test is £105 to take if you need to tow heavier items

I thought trailer was a complete no after 2001 and a vehicle weight limit of 3.5 tonnes!

I thought it depended on when you passed your test?

I know i have to take a separate test if i want to tow anything.

Category B: Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM and with up to eight passenger seats
Category B vehicles may be coupled with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM) or a trailer over 750kgs MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM.

For example:

a vehicle with an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a MAM of 2 tonnes coupled with a trailer with a MAM of 1.25 tonnes could be driven by the holder of a category B entitlement. This is because the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and also the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle
Whereas

the same vehicle with an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a MAM of 2 tonnes when coupled with a trailer with a MAM of 1.5 tonnes would fall within category B+E. This is because although the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer is within the 3.5 tonnes MAM limit, the MAM of the trailer is more than the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle

So basically, most people can tow a light car (or track car), as long as the unladden weight of the tow vehicle is more or equal to the MAM of the trailer

That to me still doesn't suggest I can tow a trailer!

There is some law that involves not being able to tow at all if you passed after 2001.

I looked into it before for towing a car

Well if you look at your licence it will say Cat B, the above text is talking about Cat B licences.

This is why you find a lot of trailer companies making 'lightweight trailers', so people who passed after 2001 can still tow

Edit: its also from the government site, so it is the law

Quote above makes sense to me ^

Ive towed a trailer before no problems, although I know now to slow down more for corners, the edge of it scratched my rear bumper

If you got your licence after 1997 then you cant tow more than 750kg without taking a seperate test.

Yeah, 750kg towing, and it's got to be within the car's rated towing allowance aswell.

The definition of a car states its max weight at 3500kg. (Slightly more if you have an LPG conversion). That quote above is excellent mind, and is different to how I interpretted it.

A Corsa is only allowed to tow 450kg iirc.

I can just about tow my trackday bike on my licence.

i sat the test last year

pretty sure the above is right up to a certain wieght

i got a license to drive a tractor when i was 16, that allows you to tow trailers as long as under a certain size and max twin axle as long as there are within a certain distance of each other

it still doesnt let me tow a trailer with the pickup untill i passed my trailer test
