UK Motorbike ftw!
I was a bit of a plate whore at one point:
Full size Motorbike font:

Smoked, 3/4 Motorbike font (Also had that non smoked):

Now, standard:

Most other fonts tend to look a bit cack tho.

if the font is the right size and spacing then a shorter plate is ok.
but the font on mine is actually smaller, although i rarely get pulled for it because it's V93 HOD which looks less cramped on a shorter plate.
i got pulled over and they told me my plates were illegal... because they had no postcode on the bottom. (only cars after 2001 need this by law) didn't even comment on the size.

Just get plain plates - the newer font with no GB bollocks or border. Tidies the whole look up no end.

eBay for cheap yet perfectly acceptable ones. I also used to use DMB graphics.
