Based on a 1.4 this is.
What is best to have in your own opinion ?
Ideally to work on and for peformance wise ETC

performance 16v
there is no room to do anything in a 16v engine bay though

16v all day long. You'd spend a fortune tuning an 8v as there isn't much out there for them!

Cams etc and you're laughing with a 1.4
However you'll end up wishing you had the 1.6

16v is better to tune but I used to love my C14se engined SRI, nice lil nippy car

and the 8v is easier to service.... especially the cambelt change!

I loved my lil SRi, was a fun car to driver. I miss it and it's rubbish paint job.

The 8v engine is a better engine allround
16v are better to tune tho coz of the cheap powerbox!!

wack some twin 40's and use the nova 1.3 sr cam on the 8v, from previously owning both engine i'd choose the 8v over the 16v 1.4 anyday

8v are less hassle and do have more top end power regardless of what people might say

Errrrrr, no, they don't 
8v have more umph bottom end.
16v has better top end.
Don't buy either for "tuning" on the road.
8v will have more miles, older engine. Slightly slower up to say 60mph (and i do mean marginally, on two GOOD running engines). Top end is exactly the same (speed).
A poor running 8v will get absolutly rapped, shafted, and boned by a 16v though. Poor little Chuckie, that engine was foo-barred

Both new engines with very low mileage to say its a fair comparison??
8bhp is nothing on the road.
On 2 good running engines, the 16v will have its front wheels ahead, literally. Otherwise, nothing in it.
Just they way the power is deliverd makes the engines feel very differnet.
82bhp vs 90bhp = nothing on the road really.
