After looking at a few 993 GT2s and seeing how they're starting to go up in price (and knowing how much my dad loves them) I got his attention and put the idea to him that the Turbo he currently has won't loose much money in the next 5-10 years, but it certainly won't earn him any. Unlike the GT2 which is sure to keep appreciating.

The GT2 has been a dream car of his (and mine) for a good few years now, and it really looked like he was semi-convinced. He asked me to try and find a few (or any) right hand drive ones (i think there were only 7 built ). He says theres no way he could live with a LHD one.

Anyway, it all seemed a bit pointless because later on he decided that he wouldn't want another 450bhp car unless it was 4WD. He just doesn't feel confident enough with that much power and RWD.

It kinda made me realise, its maybe expecting a bit much for a 55yr old.
If only i had suggested this a few years ago

Please, my dad is 64 and plenty able to drive a 450bhp RWD car.

Tell him to get a pair.

Good on him! Whats he got?

My dads confidence took a serious hit when he crashed his old C2S about 5 years ago, and even more since he rolled the Focus.

M5 the now, probably going back to a porsche tho. Does it matter tho? just because it has 450 bhp doesnt mean you need to use it.

He does like to use it though. Whats the point in having something with the power if you don't use it?

I don't get what this post is about? Are you asking for suggestions on what he should get or just telling us what he has got and what he wants

Well if your going to end up rolling it or crashing it then whats the point.

Just because it does blaahhh speed doesnt mean you need to drive it that speed. Think about it.

Neither really. Just saying, what he wants, but not man enough to get it. Its a shame cos a few years ago, if he wanted it, he would probably get it, but i think he knows he getting old and his driving abilities are getting worse.

Kinda interesting to find out what other peoples old folks drive too.

Thats why he wants 4WD. So he's got the grip to use all the power without the fear of loosing controll i think. Its just that little bit of extra peace of mind.

Now I come to think of it, my dad's 60 now, and spends just as much time driving my car as he does his. Hasn't driven a RWD since his old Vitesse decades ago, but still uses the power of mine and enjoys it.

Doesn't mean he boots it to the shops all the time etc. (I hope )

Because if you use it at the wrong time it'll kill ya Fairly simple really

Fair do's when the conditions allow and the situation comes about give it a bit of boot but using it all the time he's gonna do damage, simple as

When he crashed his last 911, he hit diesel coming off a round about (doing about 40ish), and he figured if he had 4wd he might have been able to hold it.
He is a good driver. He knows when and how to use the power, but he's been quite unlucky and he's lost a lot of confidence in himself i think. Either that or he just doesn't want to make another claim

You can't think like that.

If he'd been on a bike he may have missed it completely, he doesn't want one of them does he?

Talk him into going on a skid pan, if he does alright, you're probably 3/4 of the way to him getting one

Me and my brother were actually thinking about getting him a knockhill driving experience voucher for his birthday. I'm sure theres a skid pan one.

Also going go-karting soon. Maybe that will sort his head out (if i let him beat me that is)

i can understand wanting 4x4. You cant drive safely with any kind of decent power unless the weather is decent.. Even with t/c.

Could do anything with 4x4, rain snow ice doesnt matter.

Its not scary, just not poss to drive fast due to physics. 4x4 eliminates that factor, it does feel "safer" too.

Power is nothing without control
