dolly is for recovery only really. car doesnt have to be under a certain weight but again it comes under trailer liscence. also with a dolly, as 2 wheels are off the ground it doesnt need mot and tax either (if my understanding of the law is correct as thats what they told me on phone from dvla)

it would need to be a light weight trailer though, i will make an enquiry though

so if two wheels are off the floor it wont need tax or mot?

a frame or dolly i can get hold of with ease ill ring the dvla and the police to see where i stand to get a definate answer.
Their just seems to be alot of confusion

If it has wheels on the floor it needs to be legal unless you're recovering it, in which case you can't go 100 miles.

If you're going 100 miles, forget any hotch potch, it's illegal and you'll get potentially many points because you wanted to save 100 quid.

Trailer is 30pd

If you need something to tow it with I got a LWB transit for 75 although you may get something smaller for less. That was the only vehicle at that notice with a hook.

And to all the people who believe that because it's booked into an MOT centre, it doesn't have to have tax or mot... Incorrect.

MOT yes, you will have to prove that it is booked in to have it's mot done, but it must be taxed to be on the road under any circumstances.

If the trailer with contents is over 750kg, then the combination of vehicle + trailer has to be less than 3500kg. If the trailer is less than 750kg, the maximum is 3500kg towing vehicle + 750kg trailer.
The trailer can't exceed the weight of the towing vehicle in either case.

Worth noting Ian, that you still need B+E License Entitlement to tow a car using a trailer such as these.

Anyone who passed there test *after* january 1st 1998 need to take an extra towing test to gain the entitlement. Those who passed before that time are fine.

The tables list the vehicle category descriptions for driving tests passed after 1 January 1997 and the minimum ages for driving them. All weights refer to maximum authorised mass (MAM) unless stated otherwise. This is the total weight of the vehicle plus the maximum load it can carry.

To break that down a little, it seams that as long as your car and trailer do not weigh more than 3500KG then you do not need to do this test. If both weights are over 3500KG then you do.

If you read further down that page you'll see that it says very plain that if your trailer is over 750KG then you DO need to take this other test however the vehicle that you are in weighs more than 3500KG.

Damn I'm confused

Where can you do this test? I'm going to do it even if I do need to do it or not. If it makes me a better and safer driver then i'm all for it!!!

The combined weight would be less than 3500kg im certain of that. Im going to collect the car on sunday. So ill need to sort something asap.

I can borrow a trailer but then the combined wieght would exceed the limit as its a big one
