I agree, I dont think systems with 6x9s ever sound good.
Its surprising how many people don't believe I haven't got a 6x9s just because I have a fairly loud system that actually sounds good.
Ask anyone who knows anything about car audio and they will tell you 6x9s on the parcel shelf are a bad idea.

I've got two 13cm Pioneer in the front and Pioneer 6x9's in the back. I think it sounds pretty good

My mum said "your radio's quite good, isn't it"

6x9's can sound ok if they're from a premium brand but don't expect much imaging from them and if you've got a sub in the boot you'll be bashing shit loads of air pressure into them on the back shelf... you could box them in, but as said.. imaging tends to come from infront of you.

So for top sound quality, comps @ the front, sub in the boot

I've not got owt spesh, had 6x9's before etc but decided I did indeed prefer the sound without them, just have to get used to it.

At the mo, cheap and cheerful for me... not that loud (well, the bass is if I want it to be ) but sounds really well for the £

Pioneer DEH4900IB Head Unit
Pioneer TS-A130Ci front components
JBL GTO75.2 amp
JBL GT5 12" sub
in a 1.8 cubic foot, vented and tuned to 33Hz box.

Yeah you could do that but it wouldnt sound great! A better Set up would be

Decent headunit
Quality Component speakers in doors ( tweeters on a pillars )
Quality Single Subwoofer in well built box
Monoblock amp - powering the subwoofer
2ch Amp - Powering door speaker

this is a very simple speaker set up but sounds better than any 6x9s, keeping the sound stage around the driver and front seats improves the sound greatly + having the tweeters at ear level on the a pillars makes them much more effective than in the door handle area.
