I went to look at a pretty mint uk spec impreza turbo yesterday (classic shape). I was planning on putting a deposit down to secure it, and returning mid week to collect it.

The seller asked if we wanted to go a test drive, i advised no, would do it when i came back to collect when insurance and tax had been arranged. So the seller said he would take us out anyway, as it was his risk and his license etc.

We travelled down a country road for about 500 yards, the guy driving it pretty hard, next thing we know he's going too fast for a tight left hander, and he crossed the white line, going straight into the side of an oncoming veh

Nightmare.. anyone else had bad experiences on test drives? I'm glad it wasn't me driving, but disappointed as i wanted to buy the car lol

So you actually crashed? (not you personally, but the guy)

But tbh, your idea sounds shit. Why would you pay a deposit, insure it, then go test drive it. Waste of money tbh.

Aye, the owner crashed it into an oncoming veh. I offered a deposit as i wasn't going to have complete funds untill tuesday, and someone was meant to be viewing the car today. £20 quid on day insure for 24hrs cover, meant i wouldn't have been taking any risks yesterday, maybe not such a shit idea after all..

Gutted for you mate.

Worst test drive experience I had was a bloke took me and my dad out in a Civic I wanted and then we got back to his house and I got outbid over the phone

Not quite as catastrophic

A few weeks ago when a potential buyer came to look at my corsa i started it up and it ran fine etc.Shut the bonnet, got in to take him for a shot and it started to fuk up badly.Wouldnt run worth a fuk and it was like it wasnt getting any fuel.We were out and about for about 30mins stopping and starting trying to find out what was wrong.Got it back home and he still wanted it and put a deposit down.Me and him both knew it was a fueling issue and even tho he said hed take it as is,i told him id sort it.
Sure as shite tho.i went out to it the next day and it was fine and has been ever since.
Also when i went to view my Mk3 Gti the lassie asked if i wanted a shot on the road out of the way and i said no as i didnt have any insurance. Then what happened, she got pulled for a tail light being out.If it was me drivingid have got fuked so that was a close call.
And i dont know if this counts but i once let my mate take my old Pulsar on track, but he was under the "You bend it,you mend it rule".

I once drove my Dad's mates brand new Veccy SRi Turbo back in the day when I used to drive off road.

We forgot to tell him about that one.

What if when you went back you drove it and found something wrong or really didnt like it?

Tehn you would have lost your deposit and have to go cancel insurance

Well it was only around 25 quid for cover on dayinsure, and i was only offering him 100 quid as a deposit. I wouldn't have left without getting my deposit back.. It might not be the most logical way to purchase the car, but all above board at least.

Yeah, and it makes me laugh my head off.

What better way to sell your car, than to get the new buyer in it.

Then, without warming it, go rag the hell out of it, trying to act all big showing off to new buyer "yeah i can REALLLLLLLLY drive me........" redlining each gear, going over white line.

I would get out the car when we're back, and happily go

"thanks for the poor driving lesson, now i've seen the way you really treat your car, i.e thrashing it, I don't think i'll bother"

Then leave.

I've had this done a few times, they take you out, thrash the hell out of it, then expect you to be interested still.

Yes, i have M U G tattoed on my forehead, can't you see it?

Ironic thing is they get sh1tty with you for wasting their time.

Well actually, I WAS interested, till you showed me how you really treat the car, and now im not.

Not all test drives have been like this though. I.E my corsa hadn't even hit 3000rpm in its 13500 mile life, so when I got my hands on it and parted my cash, went to southend, and went for a top speed run, i wasn't suprised when the "defected" paper oil gasket blew

Only as an 18 year old being given keys to a brand new demo X-reg Astra Coupe Turbo by the same salesman that sold me my Corsa a year before.

My goodness after driving nothing but 75bhp cars for a year this thing felt like god knows what, so quick. Why he let me drive it I don't know

Went to test drove a Fabia VRS and the sales guy says to me he'll drive it first so I get a feel for the car. As we pull out of the dealer he sees a CTR drive past so gives it some beans chases it into a roundabout and over takes it grining

I agree with you on the ragging it from cold bit, thats just plain stupid.
However if i was buying a turbo car or a tuned car i would expect them to open it up a bit on the road and not just change up at low revs/no boost.
The only way to make sure its running spot on is take it high up the revs where any fueling issues are more likely to be noticed.

The last few cars ive sold, the buyer has actually asked me to give it some beans to make sure it can handle it.

Very true, all the guy had to do though was show me it runs well, maybe open it up a little on a straight road, after all i know the car goes round corners

Best one for me was when i test drove a 172 clio a fair few years back...i had my GF in the back and the salesman in the front and canned it around a big roundabout and it was up on 3 wheels

Now there's a car that can handle.
