I bought a pair of jeans from a shop in Reading and it took them over a month to charge my card.

Why don't you spend what you have in your bank minus the cost of what you bought

Why not just check your available balance? Even if the money itself hasn't left your account, it should have left your available balance.

Checking online or at any cashpoint, you should be able to find out your available balance very quickly.

Subtract it in your head?

No real way of knowing when it'll officially disappear. Assume soon.

this is the thing, my available balance matches my actual balance. there is no record on my online banking of me spending any money there, or on the cash machine in hsbc (my bank).

You can go to the bank and they can find out what transactions are outstanding and find out your available balance. Did this before when i paid for something and nothing happened for a while
